Our Group currently has around 16 regular members and there is no restriction on the number of U3A members who can join the Group although they do have to be a member of a Shenfield, Hutton or Warley U3A.
In keeping with the general U3A philosophy of member participation, the main ethos of the History Group is for its members to give talks on subjects of their choosing to the other members rather than have outside speakers. Therefore, anyone joining is expected to give a talk at some stage in the future. However, it is a very friendly and informal group and even members who have had no experience of giving talks have tended to find that it is nowhere near as daunting as they first thought.
Since the Group’s creation in 2008, we have had well over 100 different talks. As each has been chosen by the individual member, the subject matter has been extremely varied and always informative and thought provoking. They have covered all aspects of world history, events and characters as well as local history - in fact, just about anything that the speaker has felt might be of interest to the rest of the Group. The format of the talks is varied - for example, some members like to give their talk using, for example, PowerPoint with a laptop and projector (which can be provided along with assistance if required) whilst the majority prefer just to talk to the Group and provide back-up information for people to view.
If you are interested in joining us, please enquire via the Groups coordinator.
